About the Company

A Climate Consultancy company has undertaken a study to quantify water and energy savings in Andhra Pradesh’s diverse agro-climatic zones.

The research involves comparing conventional and natural farming practices across three key crops during both Kharif and Rabi seasons. By establishing control groups for each farming method, the study aims to precisely measure the water and energy efficiency benefits of natural farming.

Region

India

Use Case

Baselining and Monitoring of Water consumption metrics

Features Used

  • Farmer Profiling
  • Farm Mapping
  • Crop Management
  • Baselining of Irrigation Activities

Community-Managed Natural Farming (CNF) is a holistic approach to agriculture that prioritizes soil health and ecosystem balance.

By eschewing chemical inputs in favor of natural practices like mulching, crop rotation, and agroforestry, CNF fosters a thriving soil microbiome. This leads to enhanced soil structure, improved water infiltration, and increased water-holding capacity. Consequently, CNF farms often demonstrate reduced water consumption, increased water efficiency, and enhanced drought resilience, all while maintaining or even increasing crop yields.

Challenges

  • Farmers may rely on memory or estimation when recalling water usage, leading to potential inaccuracies in reported data.
  • Different farmers might use varying units (e.g., hours, litres) to measure water usage, making data comparison difficult.
  • Manual data entry by field staff can introduce errors, compromising data integrity.
  • Ensuring consistent data collection and reporting methods across different farms and agro-climatic zones is crucial for reliable comparisons.
  • Natural farming encompasses a wide range of practices, making it challenging to develop standardized metrics for comparison.
  • Determining the specific parameters to track for water and energy consumption can be complex and requires careful consideration.
  • Weather variability, soil conditions, and crop varieties can significantly influence water and energy consumption, making it difficult to isolate the impact of natural farming practices alone.
  • Collecting data from a large number of farms across different agro-climatic zones can be time-consuming and resource-intensive.
  • Ensuring data accuracy and integrity through proper data management and quality control measures is essential.

Solutions

By leveraging TraceX’s advanced platform, the consultancy was able to:

  • Establish baselines: Accurately measure water and energy consumption on conventional farms for comparison.
  • Monitor natural farming practices: Track various parameters such as rainfall, soil moisture, crop yield, and energy inputs in natural farming systems.
  • Quantify savings: Compare the data from both farming systems to precisely calculate water and energy savings achieved through natural farming.
  • Visualize impact: Utilize TraceX’s data visualization tools to create compelling reports and presentations showcasing the environmental benefits of natural farming.

This collaboration resulted in a robust dataset that demonstrated the tangible advantages of natural farming in terms of water and energy conservation. The consultancy successfully quantified the environmental impact reduction and empowered farmers and policymakers to make informed decisions for a more sustainable future.

Key Takeaways

The major rabi crops in Anantapur are groundnut and paddy. Groundnuts sown in November have attained the harvesting stage and few farmers have started harvesting. Even during the harvesting stage, there is an observable difference in water consumption by chemical farming when compared with natural. Water consumption for natural farming crops groundnut & paddy is low when compared with chemicals at all stages of the crop. Water data collection for paddy continues and harvesting is expected to happen in May.

  • Data-driven decision making: Quantifiable data on water and energy savings to support policy and investment decisions.
  • Enhanced credibility: Robust data to substantiate the claims of environmental benefits of natural farming.
  • Accelerated adoption: Demonstrated success stories to encourage wider adoption of natural farming practices.
