The Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) is a multi-stakeholder initiative founded by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). The core objectives of SRP are to promote sustainability in the global rice sector by addressing environmental, social, and economic challenges. SRP seeks to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of rice production, reduce the environmental footprint, improve livelihoods of rice producers, and ensure the resilience of rice ecosystems.
The SRP contributes to sustainable rice production through the development and promotion of best practices that minimize the environmental impact of rice cultivation. These practices include the efficient use of water, reduced use of chemicals, and the adoption of climate-smart agricultural techniques. The SRP also emphasizes the importance of promoting social responsibility by improving labor conditions, ensuring fair wages, and fostering community engagement. By integrating these practices into the rice value chain, SRP aims to create a more sustainable and resilient rice production system.
The SRP facilitates various initiatives and programs to promote sustainability in the rice industry. These include the development of the SRP Standard, a set of voluntary guidelines for sustainable rice cultivation, which serves as a reference for farmers, producers, and other stakeholders. The platform also supports capacity-building programs to train farmers in sustainable practices, encourages the adoption of innovative technologies, and works with partners to implement pilot projects that demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of sustainable rice production. Through these initiatives, the SRP strives to transform the rice sector into a more environmentally friendly, socially responsible, and economically viable industry.
